We don’t have to wait for extraordinary adventures to live a life of joy. God presents us with joyful opportunities every single day, abundantly. Yet it seems when we find ourselves living a busy life, we forget to allow our hearts to participate in the small, simple, joyful moments. Then over time, simple joys become foreign and we no longer feel worthy of taking time each day to embrace them. I’m telling you right now, you’re worth it. And finding joy in the simple things is worth it, too.
For many of us, as life responsibilities increase simple joys become secondary. And we allow the world to skew the definition of God’s JOY. We begin to think like society, rather than children of God. We think joyful moments need to be big in order to be significant. The sooner we realize this isn’t God’s intention, the quicker we will find our way back to a joyful life in Christ.
So how do we re-teach ourselves to find joy in the simple things? Everyday? If we slow down long enough to look honestly within ourselves, there are joyful moments from God just waiting to be found.
I challenge both of us to find five minutes and start there. Let’s make it simple. You’re worth it and your life here is worth it. I promise. Listen to your favorite song, doodle in your journal, walk around your yard, lay down on the couch, strum your guitar. On your way to your next appointment – walk slower and take your phone out to capture a few pictures of things you find beautiful. Pet the dog… look at some old photos, reminisce about an old memory that made you laugh. Find your joy. It’s there, God designed it for you. It’s intricately part of you, you just need to slow down and allow the Holy Spirit to help you see it.
And as you begin to practice this more frequently – you’ll not only find a more joyful life, but you’ll find yourself reacquainted with the life God designed for you.
It’s going to be great… and I’m already celebrating the simple JOY you chose for today.
Relevant Scripture: “These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.” John 15:11
Heavenly Father, guide our spirits to be confident in the joy that you deliver. As life distracts us and falsely creates expectations of what joy should be, remind us that authentic joy from you can come in small moments. Amen.
